  1. You won't necessarily be able to work with the same doctor when you're in med school, so if you're interested in a shadowing experience, definitely do that before you apply.

You will get plenty of experiences working in different medical environments while in med school, from hospitals to clinics to possibly private practices, but your time will be very limited as far as outside experiences--unless the doctor happens to be affliliated with the same hospital(s) as your med school, they probably won't be around.

The med schools do not expect you to arrange your own clinical experiences, generally speaking.

    Good luck!

  2. A lot of medical schools look to see if you've worked in a patient care setting or if you've shadowed/worked closely with physicians in the community as part of the application process.  Doing this helps solidify your interest and commitment to the field.  That being said, if you decide to apply to medical school and are accepted, there are countless opportunities to meet and work with physicians who will be more than willing to mentor you.

So the answer is - both!
