Question:

Should I find an internship or to find a full time job?

I recently graduate from college with an accounting and economics bachelor degree with an overall GPA of 3.0. I would like to go into the accounting or economics field. I know that it is easier to find jobs in the accounting field. However, I have no luck. I got interviews but never an offer. I didn't have any experiences in the accounting field. I don't know the importance of an internship before I graduate. Now, employers only want graduates who have experiences. Should I go find an internship in the accounting field instead of applying for a full time job? Am I too late to apply for an internship since I already graduate?

  1. It may be a little more difficult to actually find an internship now that you are actually out of college. But you may be lucky and something could possibly turn up for you. If it is possible I would suggest getting the internship first...even with some short term hands on experience it would be easier to find a job in your field, and have a nice salary due to the experience.

If it is a little more difficult to find that internship, try applying to temporary firms that specialize in accounting...such as Accounttemps. I would only use this place as a dtepping stone towards your career. But it could be beneficial because you may get an assignment with a business that would like to hire you after working with them through the agency. Especially if you are a very skilled worker that follows direction well.

You can also try entry level jobs at banks or other financial institutions as a steping stone. Most of these place have accounting position open but as you stated need expeerience. At least if you came in on the ground floor, you could apply for one of these position internally within 6 months to a year.

  2. Finding a full time job would be GREAT. But sometimes finding an internship (which pays less) can be a valuable foot in the door with a company of your dreams. It also looks good on your resume when you are looking to move up the corporate ladder. You have to ask yourself, can you afford to take an internship if not you will have to find a full time job to pay the bills.
