Should I get 3 male Guppies, or one male Betta?

This is for a 5 Gal tank with heater and filter.

you should get 4 or 5 male guppies  ( 1 guppy =1 gallon )

there really fun to watch.

make sure you buy plants and many hiding places for them.

betta fish is kinda boring

Personally, I like a betta in a heavily planted tank best, but it's really your preference.  Both of your ideas are good options, but if you go with the betta, there is room for expansion with maybe an apple snail, or a dwarf frog.  It's really up to you, though, there's no difference between your options.

a male betta-guppies do better in a 10g and with three of them it might get too cramped.

Well if you get the guppied in different colors I would say the guppies since they will add lots of color

bettas are sooo boring.. well unless theyre like actually bred by someone other than a company.... guppies are fun and my favorite

With 5 gallons, I would either get 1 betta or 1-2 guppies. If you want to have them both, you will need a 10 gallon at least.

Another thing is that the betta might not go along with the guppies. The fancy tails will make the betta think the guppies are bettas. There for attacking them.

I think you should get a betta, i love watching my betta, actually i can watch him for hours! Every time i come near his tank he swims to greet me. I love him to death!

Besides don't you want to rescue a betta? Most people who buy them put them in inhumane conditions, a nice 5 gallon tank would be perfect for a betta splenden. Not to mention they are beautiful and hardy. I say save one:)
