Should I get a 50cc moped or 250cc motorcycle?

Question

Evaluating fun factor, MPG (moped-100, motorcycle-70), roads I could go on (moped wont let me travel between school and home, motorcycle will), and cost (due to good situations, motorcycle is only $1200 more than the moped).

It snows where I live, so for either, riding months are limited.

50cc moped doesnt require a motorcycle license, only takes 3 bucks of gas a week and its fun to drive.

Big bikes are a pain on the *** and dangerous.

Have you ridden before? Anyway, as far as practicality, I think you will be better off getting the motorcycle.  As you say, you could travel more roadways, and IMHO the fun factor of the Motorcycle is much higher.  Are you looking for a sportbike type or a cruiser as far as motorcycles? Sportbikes and Cruisers differ in their handling abilities but also in comfort level.  The cruiser will give you longer riding range before you begin to fatigue.  Mopeds are alright also, but ultimately it should come down to your interests and your budget.

If cost is the deciding factor - scooter.

Otherwise 250 motorcycle without question.

not to mention feel good,

With the 250cc you can leave later and arrive sooner

Now that all of the squids have checked in. One is not safer than the other and it is possible to have the best of both. Scooter go up to 700cc. Of course one like that is a lot more money. Kymco and Hyosung , Vespa and Genuine all make good scooters and the first two make motorcycles as well. Any of their 250s are excellent. This is all good stuff not imported junk here. Prices are good. Scooter are a lot easier to carry things on and standard or cruisers are a lot easier to learn on. OF course you should take a MSF course .
