  1. if you have money too burn, then go for the blueray, it will be higher picture quality than an upscaled dvd.

  2. Some hardware manufacturers believe that within1 1/2 years you will start to see studios start to favor Blu-Ray (come out with movies earlier and sometimes exclusively in BD) I don't know if that is true or not but if you want to keep your new player for as long as possible then go Blu-Ray. If you are looking for something to watch movies now while you wait for 6 months to a year to replace your gear with something better then get a cheap DVD player.

As for the best picture the difference is tremendous if you have a TV 50" or bigger. Even at 42" there is noticeable improvement. If you are far back the effect is diminished.

If you wait a little you can get the Sony BDPS350 (BD Profile 2.0 player) with all the features you will want for $350 Sony tells me.(Release is scheduled for mid-May) You can expect tight supplies as this is the first 2.0 machine.

  3. Depends on what you're looking for.

Is max picture quality important?   Then it's no contest....a Blu Ray movie looks FAR superior to any upconverted DVD.    It's not even close.

And the bigger the TV, the more obvious the difference is.

Now, the upconvert player is cheaper, but here's my suggestion:    Get a PS3...it'll do BOTH.   Plus you'll get a game system.

  4. Time to cut and run on DVD. In a few years they will be as appealing as your video tape collection. Maximum pixel count on a DVD is 480 x 720, or about 300,000 pixels. Bluray is 1080 x 1920, or about 2,000,000 pixels!

I disagree with the first responder. $399 is not expensive for something you will probably keep for five years. Something that is not going to go out of style until the television system is revamped again, which took 50 years last time.

Stop collecting DVDs and get your Bluray collection started.

  5. You will get a true HD picture with a blue-ray disc.  They hold more than 5 times as much data as a standard DVD, and if you have a good TV and use the right cables it's the best picture you can get.  1080 upconvert players take regular DVDs and basically add lines based on what is already there.  The picture is better than a regular DVD, but not as good as Blu Ray.

Like any new technology, Blu Ray players are still pretty expensive.  If cost is an issue, get an upconvert player now and buy a Blu Ray in a year or so when the prices come down more.

Blu Ray discs are different than DVDs, and to get true HD you would have to replace all of your DVDs with BDs.  Otherwise it acts the same as an upconvert player would.

  6. By Christmas this year, you'll only be paying around $200 for a Blu-ray Disc player.  And sure, the picture on Blu-ray is great, but the fact that the AUDIO is so much better than DVD is what makes Blu-ray worth the extra money.

Blu-ray doesn't just offer more scanlines.  The "up-convert" DVD player can't match Blu-ray Disc's color reproduction or frame rate.  The difference is noticable on "non-1080p", HDTVs and even on ANALOG televisions.

  7. First of all Blu-Ray DVD players are extremely expensive.  They start out at $399 to $499 dollars depending on the Blu-Ray model brand.  Plus currently the Blu-Ray DVD players on the market at the moment can not be upgradable to the features like Picture and Picture, and  bonus materials about from the movie (online) until at least October 2008 when Sony releases an update version 2.0

The only current Blu-Ray player model that can be updated in the future is the Playstation 3.  The cheapest price for the PS3 is $299.99 which includes the video game console and built in Blu-Ray DVD player.

As for DVD players that are 1080 upconvert.  I have seen them sell for less than $80.00.  I think this would be much better especially if you already have a good high definition television and until Blu-Ray DVD players come out one that is upgradable and expandable.
