I just got a new 42" HD tv. I have already got HD service, now my next step would be to get a new dvd player. Question would be should I get a blu ray or a HD player? Or should I get either? If im going to spend decent money on this it has to be worth it in terms of a huge difference from a regular dvd player to justify buying one. Are these worth the price? Thanks.

  1. i think the Blue Ray is better...I find a deal for Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Playe, it looks nice, you can have a look:

  2. I suggest to get either a Samsung dual format player. I have a dual format player from LG and like the fact that I can play movies from either format without worrying about a silly format war.

  3. Blu-ray

  4. Neither!!!!!!

Wait until a format has won the market share fight.

Remember (VHS vs BETA) It sure would have sucked to buy one of those beta machines just to find out they were obsolete before they got started.

Best bet is to wait until there is a victor.

  5. Both...

BR is here to stay, HD is almost dead but at the current prices why not, and is a h**l of a upconverted dvd player

  6. Blu Ray for sure... if you like games go for PS3 they came with blu ray and it's cheaper than blu-ray players

  7. HD

  8. My suggestion is demo one and decide for yourself. Many people rave about Blu-ray and HD DVD, but personally I don't think they are worth the (current) high price premium. I have an HD DVD player and on my 110" screen and 720p projector the difference from upscaled DVD is barely noticeable. And video quality on  Blu-ray and HD DVD is essentially identical, so it's not that HD DVD isn't as good as Blu-ray.

I suggest going to a store where they can connect a HD player to a TV as similar to yours as possible (at least same size and resolution). View a DVD and a HD disk (it's easiest with an HD DVD combo disks since they have HD on one side and normal DVD of the same movie on the other side) at the same distance as you will sit from the TV at home.

If you decide the benefits are worthwhile, as to choosing HD DVD or Blu-ray I could give you all sorts of reasons why HD DVD is the more consumer friendly format, but the bottom line is most movies are only available on Blu-ray, so unless you want primarily a good upconverting DVD player that also plays HD DVDs ( in which case the HD-A3 is a great deal at about $120 with free HD DVD disks) you probably should buy Blu-ray.

That said, Blu-ray isn't ready for real time yet since there are still changes in hardware and software being implemented. It would be best to wait a few months at least before buying. And prices will likely be lower too.

    Hope this helps.

  9. Definitely Blu-Ray Most studios are supporting mostly all studios exept Universal they still are Hd dvd but recently paramount announced that they were going blu ray and Warner bros would follow. and at the latest CES show Toshiba didn't really have alot of buzz. plus netflix is blu ray exclusive now and blockbuster has been for a while

  10. You might want to go this way, PS3 for your Blu-ray and gaming system $499.00 and HD DVD Toshiba A30 1080p player for HD DVDs and upconverting your regular DVDs $160.00 or less on amazon. Either way or both would be safe. The format war is not over but it has swung heavy toward Blu-ray. I have the Toshiba A30 1080p player and I couldn't be happier.

  11. Get Blu-Ray. I'm an HD DVD owner and now regret it. Most movie studios and now my rental agency Netflix have gone Blu. There is no future in HD DVD. Want to buy my Toshiba HD-XA2?

  12. Everything's eventually going to direct digital download.  Invest the money and then, when the format is entirely digital downloads check how much you made on your investment versus what you would have spent.

  13. yes they are worth the price....i think the best is Blue Ray....has better titles.....and there is a Sony which  is like $400  bucks really affordable compare to HD  DVD players...i saw it was like $700...so it's your call...

  14. blue ray all the way........ hd ,s future is not bright

  15. samsung has an HD DVD/Blu Ray player for about $500-800.

but i had to pick, get a Blu- Ray.  More movie companys and netflix are going towards blu  ray
