Should I get a goat or a sheep?

I do want a small farm animal (preferably a dwarf goat/sheep), particularly one that produces a lot of milk for cheesemaking. Would it be better for me to get a goat or a sheep? Which one is more high maintenance, and which one is a better companion?

  1. I have had many goats and a small flock of sheep for many years and have found that goats are much easier to milk and produce a good deal more. As far as care, goats and sheep are pretty much the same. If I have to go away for a little while I don't have to fret about either specifically. However you do have to take into account that if you are looking at milking the animal you will either have to buy one that is already milking or is pregnant to get the milk. Then you have to remember that if you buy one that is already milking you have to milk that animal once or twice a day "every" day or it will develop mastitis and you will put the animals life in danger. If you buy one that is pregnant when they do have their babies you have to make sure that there is enough milk produced for the babies and yourself. You might have to wait until the babies are weened and keep the animal milking for what you want. Either way just remember to research your decision and make sure that you are ready to commit to such a responsibility. The only breed of sheep that is really suitable for milking is the Frisian which is used primarily for milk and produces almost as much milk as a goat would. One of the better breeds of goats for milking is the Alpine or an Alpine cross. Hope this info helps and good luck on your new addition!

  2. goat~~~~ sheep r gross and more high strung

  3. i prefer a goat coz  goats are one of the oldest domesticated species. For thousands of years, goats have been used for their milk, meat, hair, and skins over much of the world. In the last century they have also gained some popularity as pets.

  4. Well they are both rewarding animals but goats are probably better for the average person. Sheep are incredibly high maintenence. Sheep take up hours of every single day.  With a sheep you cant leave even on a one day vacation.  A goat is more like an average pet/livestock that requires just food, water, healthcare, & shelter. Plus a goat produces more milk for cheese making.
