Okay, well I've been pondering this for a while and have come to the conclusion that I do indeed need one, but would just like to hear other people's opinions. Okay well, here's my situation; I'm going to college in the fall and commuting as its only 10 minutes away and my parent's are offering me either a laptop or just plain money to use on college or whatever I feel that I need.

In my house there is only ONE computer and my two older brothers are constantly hogging it and on myspace/facebook 24/7, and since I am planning to be an English/Journalism major Im going to have to spend ALOT of time infront of a computer typing papers right?

What do you all think? Should I get the laptop? Or the $1000+ dollars my parents are going to give me.

  1. get a laptop irrespective of your major

get a really cheap one so that you can get a new one in your junior year

  2. I think the laptop would be more useful, especially if you're an English major.

I'm just starting high school and I don't hand write anything anymore!

  3. Laptops vary in cost from $500 to $5000. I would really suggest that you get a laptop. But, make sure that the cost of it is around or close to the cash that your parents will give you. If they buy you a laptop that cost half the cash you will receive in the first place, ask for the difference. $600 laptop means you have about $400 cash. It's a win-win for you. Good luck on your college days.

  4. If you'e commuting, no. Save your money. We bought one for my son as he was sharing an apartment in the city, and it was truly necessary. But if you're at home, your parents will insist on you - the student - getting priority on computer time. That's how it works here. If it gets nuts, get a second desktop at home.
