Question:

Should I get a new backpack?

have a semester of HS left.

My backpack from the past few years is trashed. Its so worn out and all gross.

I want to get a new one. My mom handles all my back to school expenses, clothes, supplies, etc.

Im worried she is going to say no.

I have other bags I can use but no other back packs. I don't do well with other bags, they make my shoulders hurts and the backpacks are easiest on me.

I was in PacSun today and some some adorable ones. I decided Im going to get one from there.

I would also use this in college.

I want to get her to say yes but how?

  1. Backpacks aren't meant to last forever. They do wear out, zippers break, etc, no matter how well you take care of it.

The current state of your backpack is the best evidence for your case, show it to her, ask her for a new one, one that is good quality and will go with you to college.

The good news for you, though, (and you don't have to tell your mom) is that once you get to college you don't have to carry your textbooks around anymore. You leave them in your dorm and when you go to class you just bring a notebook and a pen. Most girls at my school just carry a large purse. A very *few* teachers will ask for you to have a book in class, but they will tell you at the beginning of the semester and it's usually only one and not for the whole time.

I do suggest a backpack with a padded pouch for your laptop. You're going to need to cart around your laptop for things like group projects, and many students take notes on their laptops in class (I do). Laptops aren't really an "option" in college anymore, they are pretty much required. So think ahead to your college needs and point out to your mom that your old backpack won't be "safe" for your laptop.

  2. Tell her your about to go into college and

need a backpack as an everday use.

  3. ???

    just ask.

    you need if for skewl.

  4. She'll want to see the evidence that the bag is no longer good enough. Perhaps if you over stuff it and show how inadequate it is, then she might buy into the need for a new bag more so than its shoddy condition. As a parent, she's likely to say you should have taken better care of it so live with it. Somehow you need to show a need, not just a want.

As an aside, do you have any way to earn the money for the backpack yourself?  Tell her you want to do extra chores to raise the money for the bag. Then see if she will split the cost with you. It worked for me with my parents.
