Question:

Should I get a surfboard or an iPod Touch?

For Christmas, I can either get the iPod Touch, as the one gift from my parents, or I can get the money (I think it's around $400) toward a new custom surfboard? I am a bit concerned with the Touch since its a first gen. and I haven't heard amazing things about the battery life either.

The board I'm looking at is a Todd Proctor board. I've been in contact with him and I am thinking about getting one of his Custom Epoxy boards. It would cost somewhere around $750 and $800 if I were to get the sweet artwork I want.

I have $800 dollars left over from working this summer, but need to spend it on clothes, food, movies, etc. (Not a car . . . yet since I'm only 15

What do you think?

  1. surfboard no questions asked. an itouch, can easily be replaced with cheaper options.... OR even better, get the surfboard, ride your heart out on it, after a year or soo when you feel satisfied, sell the board, then get a new board and the itouch when the price is alot lower.

  2. $750 for a board?!  Does it automatically catch waves for you?  Unless you're a complete surfing rock star do you really need a board that expensive?  Take the 400 bucks and put it towards a more reasonably priced board.

  3. Surfboard

  4. surfboard!!! for cert!!

  5. Dude. I think that you should get a surfboard. The iPod touch is overrated. I got one and it kinda sucks. I say you should get a new surfboard

  6. Surfboard, for sure...assuming you will actually use it?

  7. my little sister has the ipod touch and it is really horrible, and the screen is not as tough as the other i-pods and hers already has a crack in it, plus the board will last longer, it will have your customization on it, and you will enjoy it a lot more

  8. surfboard cuz u can get a iPod Touch whenever but surf boards prices will nvr go down but there both a big responsibilty u need to wax the bored every 2 weeks i think

  9. Hey.

Well, since you're posting this questions in the "Surfing" section, I'm guessing you kind of already know the answer yourself ...?

Anyway, do get the board.  It's a great investment.  It doesn't break or get stolen as easy as the iPod and it won't be outdated by this time next year, like most electronics.

Also, in a few more months, the price of the electronic will have come down alot.  So maybe by then you will have saved some more and get both.

    Ride the waves!

    .

  10. Surfboard. u will have endless fun

  11. get da board!!

  12. Assuming you already know how to surf, go for the surfboard.  But I'd only spend about $400 to $600 on a new board.  The only way that I'd spend upwards of $750 is a nice heavy single-fin longboard,  or a Firewire, or an Aviso board.  No need to spend almost a grand on the board unless is paddles itself.  At 15, do you realize how much more you can do with the extra $400?  Unless you're on the WQS, there's no reason to get a board in the $700 range.

As for the iPod Touch, it's first gen like you said, and it's cool, but not THAT cool.  There's not much space in its memory, and you could easily get a non-touch iPod for the same price or less but with tons more room for all your music.  The iPod Touch won't get cheaper anytime soon, even when the 2nd Gen stuff comes out.  It's Apple... they rarely let things get cheaper.  Even then, you'd be waiting years before the first gen stuff goes cheap enough.  But by then, the first gen stuff just isn't worth it.

Besides, an iPod is easy to lose, get stolen, etc.  Most people don't even know what to do with a surfboard.  Go with a custom board, but don't spend $800 on it.  Your shaper should have better prices than that, even for an epoxy.  But if it's the artwork that's adding a bunch of dinero to the price, I wouldn't bother with the fancy artwork.  Color and artwork doesn't make you surf better.  I'd rather go with a clean all white board that looks like everyone else's, but rides like a dream, than a snazzy board that rides okay.
