Question:

Should I get a work visa or dual citizenship?

* I am CANADIAN

I am planning to go to europe to work as an au pair and need a work visa since most of the positions are 6 mnths +.

I qualify for dual citizenship for italy since my folks are from Italy and am wondering if I would still need a visa in that case of if the DC is good enough.

I was told that it may not be a good idea to get DC because if I get into trouble in Europe, Canada can't step in. ( not that I plan to get arrested but who knows what could happen)

Does anyone know how long it takes to get a DC and a work visa ; any info on either would be appreciated..

  1. its not a form or anything just apply for an Italian passport and presto you have dual citizenship.   I qualify for citizenship in three countries (don't ask) but I have citizenship in two.  I carry a passport from my old country and I am now a Canadian  citizen with a Canadian passport.  I do travel on my passport from the old country because of Canada's poor record of helping its citizens abroad.

    Advantages are that Italy is a member of the EU so you may travel and work ANYWHERE in the EU without restrictions, as a citizen you should qualify for their social services after applying.  With two passports if you get into trouble you surrender one and get out of dodge with the other.  Also as a citizen you don't need a visa to enter and work in the country.

    Downside is there may be military restrictions some places have national service I don't know if italy has it, taxes

    Good luck and do be careful over there
