Question:

Should I get another finch???

I recently got 2 female finches, to live in an aviary with my 1 male finch. All 3 birds got along great at first, but then the 2 females started fighting. There are no eggs, so I assume they are fighting over the male. Should I get another male finch so that the "left out" female has a buddy?? Or would this just cause more fighting? One of the females is definately picked on the most, and sleeps alone :(

  1. It would cause more fighting.

The reason the hens are fighting is because one of them has paired with the male, and is now acting territorial to protect her mate.  This is regardless of eggs being there.

If you introduce another male to the flock, chances are the lone female will pair up with him - and this could induce fighting amongst both pairs DEPENDING on how large the cage is.

If it is atleast 24" wide you shouldn't have *too* big a problem.

Just make sure whatever you do you don't introduce the ability to breed (eg a nest) because that will REALLY create a problem.

What breed of finch are they?

Some in general just can't be housed more than 1 pair to a cage. (Shafttail, green singers, etc.)

  2. Yes, you should the poor girl, but be prepared once they start making the babies the clutches can overwhelm you. If you are not ready for that get a smaller aviary or seperate place for her.

  3. sometimes finches can be pushy but rarely hurt eachother, finches are social birds so honestly the more the better :)  check out http://www.parrotcentral.net/ for good bird info

  4. Great Idea! Sure why not. Do make sure you have enough space, shady spots, food, water, toys, treats etc to accomodate needs of the extra bird.

This way you can be sure that after the initial introductions, they will work things out between themselves and live as a more stable flock. (with nobody being left out or bullied)
