4 yrs of IT/Business Analyst experience and a BS degree on IT. I just went to an interview with an insurance company, and it looks like there're some good money in this business. I have no experience in sales, but i think i have the potential because of my personality. I mean, i don't know what the base salary is... I guess you get paid by commission? I know nothing about sales........... ! Any advice?

  1. My advice is if you know nothing about sales, but are interested in selling, get something where your previous knowledge does some good for you, like selling database apps.  Most of these will be salary plus commission, you'll half-way know what you're talking about, and your managers will be patient with your growth as long as you show progress.  Commission-only jobs (especially of an intangible product whose future value may not be realized by its consumers) are a difficult way to cut your teeth.

  2. You get paid straight commission.  About 95% of people who try insurance sales, wash out.

The potential is there for good money, but you have to work really, really hard to make the good money.  Plan on 60 to 80 hour weeks the first few years, to bring home $50,000.
