Should I get larger size shoes for running?

Should I pick between a perfect fitting running shoe (the same size as my regular shoes) or get a size larger to accomodate my toes? I read it's better to get larger shoes, but wouldn't that make the shoe more loose on your foot and cause problems when running?

  1. I would think that by getting bigger shoes you have a higher chance of twisting or spraining your ancle.  I've always prefered running with shoes that fit snug.

  2. just make sure they dotn rub to much when you run, otherwise you will be cursed with blisters!!

  3. You should get the perfect fit of shoe, if you ge a size larger, you foot slides around in the shoe as you run and causes friction which causes blister.

  4. it is better to get a perfect fitting shoe so that when you run you wont trip and fall flat on your face. good fitting shoes wont trip you up.

  5. Go to a good running store and have them measure your foot properly. Different makes of shoes will fit differently and so you might take a slightly different size depending on the make. You don't want your toes to hit the end of the shoe when you run - so be sure to give it a good test in the store - jog on the spot, jump up and down - see how it works. Also get good socks.

  6. You should always have more room in your toe box area.  When you run (especially more than 5km) your feet start to swell under the increased pressure (up to 4 times your body weight on impact.)

Your shoe should feel snug around the laces (not super tight!) so that your foot stays in place - it won't slide around unless the shoe is too wide.  Your toes should be able to wiggle around without the tips of your toes ever touching the end of the shoe.

Right now I'm wearing shoes that are a size and a half bigger than my regular shoes and I really love the extra space.  I thought it looked a little awkward at first (women always wish their feet were more petite) but I had to learn that my foot comfort is more important while straining that part of my body.  Your feet (and joints) will appreciate it when you start going for longer runs.

What I would recommend is buying a pair of shoes a size bigger than your regular shoes and then try running on a treadmill (if you have access to one.)  If it feels uncomfortable then return the shoes.

    Good luck!

  7. it is best to get a fitted shoe because if it is too large then your feet may slide up and could cause problems, but try the dr. scholls "gellin'" products... new balance shoes are great for running

  8. PERFECT FIT!

  9. I always run with my regular size and have no problems.

  10. Running shoe sizing varies by manufacturer so it's impossible to say if you should get the same size as a regular shoe.  However, for most running, getting a shoe that feels snug but not over-tight is best.  Running shoes are generally soft and have lots of room for adjustment with the laces.

If there is too much extra room in there, you'll get heel slippage and blisters.  If you plan on running ultra marathons (greater than 42km), then you should consider sizing up to accommodate foot swelling, but otherwise, go with what feels most comfortable.  And don't forget to wear your running socks when trying on the shoes.

  11. You will need a bigger size, usually 1/2 - 1 inch larger because when you run your feet will move, and if there is no space for your toes to move they will feel the pressure and cause pain... but if you have ran with regular fitting shoes and felt comfortable in them, there is no reason to differ.

  12. Get a shoe that fits, or you will end up with blisters.
