Question:

Should I get my dwarf hamster a buddy?

I know dwarf hamsters live in groups, and Blueberry (my campbell's dwarf) looks very lonely. Should I get him another dwarf hamster to live with? I already have Blueberry and Stanley (a syrian) and I don't know if my mom will let me get another one. Is 2 dwarf hamsters more work? I've had Blue for about 3 months...and he loves to try and play with Stanley, so I think it would make him happier. How can I convince my mom? Thanks!

  1. no!!!!!!!! i had two dwarf hammys and they nearly killed each other!to this day,one of them is phsycho.

  2. Dwarf hamsters can live in perfect harmony if they are from the same litter or have been introduced to each other when still pups.

Introducing a completely new dwarf hamster in a cage where one has already been living for the past 3 months and expecting them to co-exist is very hard to predict. I have had cases where the two such hamsters have gone on to live very peacefully but I have also seen a few cases where the hamster already in the cage has turned violent and shown territorial behavior.

Blueberry is already 3 months old in his cage and could have gotten territorial with his cage. Hence it is very difficult to predict how he would react to another hamster in his cage unless we see it in realtime. If you are still keen on trying it out, you can try to introduce the new dwarf to his cage but keep a close watch. If there is vicious fighting, you might have to separate them quickly and find the new hamster another cage.

  3. Dwarf hamsters are perfectly fine living together.  They appreciate the company of another hamster.  Just make sure that they are of the opposite s*x as you don't want to have baby hamsters.

But don't put your syrian and dwarf hamsters together.  Syrians like to be alone and if you try to let them play, there's going to be serious fighting that might end in the death of your adorable hamster.

As far as convincing your mom, I'm blank there.  Never could convince my own mom to get any pets without her getting upset.  You could tell her that dwarf hamsters need company and that just might work.

    Hope this helps you!

  4. Get one of the opposite s*x. Because another male looks like someone dominating him.

  5. You can! But first you might want to find a TALL box and introduce them to each other! Put them in there but watch CLOSELY! They may fight! If they do you can send it to me! JK, If they do fight but another SMALL cage and keep putting them in the box togther untill they get use to each other! Happy Hamstering!

  6. I would say no as well. If they are not from the same litter or introduced at a young age, they will fight, even if they are oppisite genders. It sounds like you just want an excuse to get another pet, but it wouldn't be good for the hamster, even though it is a dwarf hamster.

  7. I wouldn't advise you to.

Hamsters that are new to each other frequently fight to the death.

You could use the split cage method to try and introduce them, but it may not work.

I would advise for the healthy and safety of your hamster to live it alone. It may seem 'lonely' but it's better that than to have it stressed from a stranger.

I can read what you said!

I work in a pet shop; I know what I'm talking about.

Dwarf hamsters will also fight to the death if they are strangers, which your hamsters would be!

You can try the split cage method, which you can google for more information, but if you just grab another hamster and pop it in there, they will fight, and fight badly.

  8. No, I think you're just looking for more pets.

It will be more work because what you're doing for Blueberry, it will be twice. Dwarf hamsters DO like to live in groups, but they like to live in the groups from the litter their born with. I HIGHLY advise you NOT to mix them together unless you want a bloody mess to clean up. Just do it one hamster at a time, dont go around asking for more just cause your mom let you have one. 3 months, you're pretty new to owning hamsters and I think you should do a little more research on them. I've been owning hamsters for 6 years and Ive seen all types of situations where the hamsters fight because people decide to be ignorant and not listen when they say DONT MIX THEM. Trust me, your hamster is fine the way he is. He likes having his OWN space with his OWN food dish and his OWN water bottle. Sharing, is not an option for hamsters. Listen to what everyone said instead of fighting against them, cause half these people probably know what they're talking about, like me.

  9. just so you know, dwarf hamsters do still fight to the death if they arent from the same litter.

DO NOT get another hamster.  blue will be fine
