Question:

Should I get my golf clubs extended?

I am 6'2-6'3 about 300 lbs ( I am not obese by any means, just a big guy) I am about a 10-13 handicap depending on the course. I am trying to fine tune my game. I found the clubs I like to play with, along with the type of golf ball that does the best for me. I am now trying to find tune my swing. I spray the ball of the tee, mostly to the right, but sometimes to the left. I played 2 holes with clubs that were extended and my own clubs, not only did I hit the ball straighter/longer, but shot 2 strokes better with the longer sticks. I went to ***** Sporting Goods and got it all looked and i was told to just change my stance, but I am still crouched over my clubs. I really do feel that I need extenders on my clubs, i was thinking maybe a half inch? I went to Pings website and I am a "Gold dot" and it says half inch extension. But I wanted to know what someone else thought! Any input would be a great help. I'd prefer experienced players thoughts, but new players input is welcome! Thanks

  1. this goes to show everybody is different, i played callaway x-18s  +1 inch and was all over they place, i had them cut down to 1/2 under standard now with a more compact swing im right down the middle,im 6'3 but i like feeling closer to the ball. its a control feel for me

also if you do want longer clubs i would recommend getting new clubs or getting new shafts, ive heard alot of neagatives about extenders ... good luck

  2. I'm your height .PING set me up + 1/2"  2* upright, and there is a noticeable improvement.

  3. extending and re-gripping is half the battle you most likely also need to have the lie bent up which your clubs have to be forged to do this as cast will break or just over time go back to the original lie angle and don't forget the grip size if you have big hands you most likely need a couple extra wraps of tape or a fuller grip  so the cost per club could be 10 to 20 bucks a club so you might want to buy new clubs ordered with all the correct length and lie and grips its worth the upgrade with all the new clubs on the market hurry tho it takes a couple of weeks to custom order if they dint have them in stock but this a good time to buy stores are clearing out demos and last years models at great prices so you could get top of the line clubs for low end prices

  4. if you are uncomfortable with your clubs then you should definitely extend them. Go to a golfstore and get fit for a set of irons that you like.  Ping does the best job for custom fittings so i would recomend buying their clubs and ordering through them

  5. Yes you should have them extended.

The local golf club manufacturers here in Scotland used to remove the grip, fit hickory extensions then re-grip them again.

I'm not sure what they use these days.

It will make all the difference having clubs the correct length.

  6. I'm short but I found that 1" longer driver has helped me tremendously. I slowed down everything off of the tee. Just a head thing but it worked for me.

  7. the gold lie is very upright , along with the longer shaft , there will definatly be no crouch . if ping has you in a gold lie it is correct . make all the difference in the world , even better have the clubs reshafted , and the lie adjusted . little more cost . much better than , adding extension . good playing

  8. Hello There,

There is nothing more important to "fine tuning" than having the proper fit in clubs. Any good golf store that offers clubs sales should have a certified club fitter. This trained person can use several tools to find the correct clubs for you. Four major factors are used when determining club fit.

1.Length: This is determined through a static measurement should be one of the first things tested.

2.Lie Angle: The lie adjustment of your clubs can be determined using a "strike board" and contact stickers to see where on the club face and sole you are making contact. When you adjust length, you also change this factor, making it critical.

3.Shaft flex: Swing monitors help determine speed groupings to help you pick the the flex. ie. stiff, senior, regular...

4.Grip size: This factor is often overlooked but shouldn't be. The proper grip can help reduce a lot of ball spraying.

Fitted clubs can be ordered and should cost no more than buying standard clubs. Any reputable golf store should not only offer this, but recommend it. If they don't, you're better off buying clubs elsewhere. Best of luck and shoot low rounds!
