Hey,

For my birthday I will hopefully getting one or two tame Cockatiels. I hear that they are flock birds so I'm not sure whether I should get one or two. Should I get two males or a male and female or two females? Also if you could add some basic care tips and tricks it would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks,

Matt

  1. Get two if you want to breed them, but only one if you want it as a pet,two will not bond as well as one with you and can not be trained as well.

You need a good size cage!!

They need a good diet, consisting of a Good Budgie Mix,a little Sunflower.Black /White,now and again a little Hemp.

Greens such as Broccoli ,Kale,Spinach,a little Carrot including tops and when in season Dandelion Leaves and Seeding heads before they burst, seeding grasses are also good for them.

    Never give them Lettuce.

Fruit such as Apple ,Pear, never Avocado,or Chocolate.

As an occasional treat soak some of their seed in warm water over-night drain rinse, place some-where warm till it sprouts then feed it to them.

Never forget their need for Cuttle-bone and a Mineral block and if on its own a toy,for when you are not around.

But it is better if you buy yourself a book on Cockatiels and this will give you alot of information.

  2. I wouldnt get any!

Get a dog - its much better for you, keeps you fit, shows you affection and is much more rewarding than a bird.

  3. DEFINATLY get 2.

i know someone wiht just 1 bird and it only knows you, then when you are away the bird might freak when your not there.

The bird i know sqwaks and screams untill someone comes and pays it attention.

i dont think you would want that?

so getting two would be a little more work but it will be better in the long run.

    hope this helps

  4. Get one and only one..... With two they will bond with each other and forget about you. They will grow wild very quickly. Also no mirros, they fall in love with them selfs....

Have fun with your new bird

  5. One is better if you want him to bond with you. Other wise he will bond to the other bird. He will also learn to mimic/talk quicker, more often and better if he is the only bird. YOu can also spend more time with one bird, more money on one bird, more toys.... as apposed to haveing to buy or share time with two. JO

  6. Get one to start with, and if you ever get another cage them seperately.  If you buy two they wil bond strongly with each other.  Theya re flock birds which is why they need our attention so much: we become the flock.  Be sure to keep things very clean, provide a healthy diet, and lots and lots of playtime with lots of foraging toys.
