it depends on your needs.

however, i would get a 40D or maybe even a 50D. their features compare to the D300 is pretty close and the 40D/50D is much cheaper. once the 50D hits the market the price of the 40D will drop.

the 50D will come out in October.

if you aren't a canon user then you should stick with the D300.

If you need a great digital SLR camera and the price is no issue, the Nikon D300 will exceed your needs. Those requiring a faster frame rate and greater autofocus speed should consider a D3, provided they can handle the extra size and weight. I won't call it a compelling upgrade for happy D200 owners, but it sure wouldn't hurt if you're in the market for something even better than the D200. Nikon's D300 is an amazing machine

The Nikon D300 is a great camera with alot of features. It will last you foreever and stand up to day to day use. I love mine. But you need to look at if it is the right camera for you. Since it has alot of functions it has a number of controls. you need to learn to use these to truely enjoy the camera ( the manual is around 500 pages) . Some folks want a camera that is easy to use. While you have a program mode on the D300 and it works great, why pay for alot of other features if you are not going to use them. So look at what you want to do then match the camera to it Some folks should get the D300 others would be better off with a D60 or D90 and spend the other money on accessories and lenses

I'm a Canon user myself... but I have had the opportunity to use the Nikon D300, and I must say, that is one NICE camera!

Try it out at the store before you make your final decision. Make sure it fits well in your hands and that you're comfortable using it.
