I have posted my resume on monster.com and now recruiters are asking me for my social security number. Is this a SCAM? Or do they need that info before I go for the interview?

  1. IT'S A SCAM!!!!!!!  Don't ever, ever, ever give out your Social Security number to a recruiter.  NEVER EVER!!!!!!!!

    I'm serious.  I'm a lawyer and I know what I'm talking about.

    Seriously.

  2. Do not give out your SSN.  The only time you do so is when you are completing an application form.

The "recruiters' calling you are scammers.  They are hoping you'll be naive enough to give it, then they have your name, address, and SSN.  That's enough to open a credit card in your name or a line of credit in your name.

  3. Absolutely a scam. And sorry to disagree with the Inspector. You should never even put your SSN on an application. Just leave it blank. If they ask you about it, assure them that you are legally eligible to work in this country, and you will be happy to prove it at the proper time. The proper time is AFTER you have a job offer. A job offer includes an offer of employment, it explains your duties, and it spells out your pay and benefits.

The job offer may however be contingent on a background check. In that case, you have to sign a document giving them permission to do a background check, which often includes a credit check. At that time, they will need your SSN. You will also have to supply your SSN on your first day of work when you fill out your I-9 form. The I-9 proves that you are legally entitled to work. You will also have to give your SSN to the company's payroll department for tax withholding purposes. That can also be done on your first day of work.
