Question:

Should I give my boss a two week notice?

I just got a job at a computer store as a technician two weeks ago, and I am going to be moving out of state and going to college in three weeks. He never asked me how long I was planning on working there and I never signed any contracts. I told him a couple of times that I was going to move out of my parents house (I just graduated a couple of months ago) in about a month; however, he did not believe me either time. Anyways, should I give him a two week notice and risk the chance of losing my job right then or should I just say "c'ya" once I get my last paycheck right before I leave for college? Oh and if I should give my notice, how should I go about doing it?

  1. I would give your boss notice because future bosses can check your work history ( that includes your behavior at departure). When you know for sure that you will be moving, tell your boss "thank you" for the opportunity for working there.

  2. It is professional courtesy to give 2 weeks notice.

Give your notice in writing.  Make it professional.  "I've accepted another opportunity. I'm giving two weeks notice.  I've enjoyed working for you.  Thank you for the opportunity and experience that you gave me.  Sincerely...."

  3. Yes the is the respectful thing to do.

  4. It was really not nice to take a full time permanent job when you knew you would only be there a few weeks.  But you did.  To minimize the damage to both of you give a one week notice.   That way you don't end up loosing 2 weeks pay just one if he is justifiably PO'd and says you're done as of now and he doesn't end up w/no warning that he has to go through all the expense and hassel of finding another tech.
