Should I give the homeless people granola bars instead of change?

I visit South Africa a lot and many people there give beggars sandwiches or items of used clothing rather than money!!

No. They can go to homeless shelters to get food. They want the money for alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, etc. so it's really not a good idea to give them money either.

If you really want to help homeless people, volunteer at your local homeless shelter or food bank because the people that really need the most help are the ones going there, not the ones asking you for money on the street.

make a basket with non-perishable foods for them.

put things like granola bars, bottled water, trail mix, cans with a can opener (items that can be eaten cold preferably), vienna sausages, soda, noodles (can be eaten raw), snack cakes, beef jerky, peanut butter, that sort of thing.

they will appreciate it and be able to eat for awhile.  don't worry if people look at you weird, you know you are doing a good deed and i am sure the person would appreciate food to last him for awhile.

Yeah! Especially chocolate chip ones!! Mmmm!! I give away cans of pop, loose change, stuffed animals, (to the younger ones.) And on thanksgiving, me and my dad pick out a GIANT FREAKIN TURKEY and give it too the shelter.

we always give them food instead of money. that way they have what they need, and aren't tempted to spend it on something they don't need. They are usually very grateful for whatever you give them, so don't hesitate to give them food instead of change

If you're worried about a homeless person thinking you're weird, forget it.  Give them food or something to drink.  If they don't like it then don't give them anything.
