Question:

Should I go to Oxford?

I'm coming over from America to visit England and I have thought of staying in Oxford, but not sure. I won't be driving and I will depend mostly on public transportation. I'm 19, single, and very energetic, so I wanna be around lots of young ones. I also would like to be in area that is safe and clean. Do you think Oxford would be a good idea or should I go to another part of Britain? Here are some pictures from other vacations I have taken, if you look and see the other trips that can give you an idea of my personality and what you think I would like. Please only experienced travelers and British people answer.

  1. haha i'm from Oxford.

Yes it is a lovely place, lots to see and do. And crime is relatively low, although apparently it is the 'bike crime' capital of the UK.

Definitely reccomend it, but I would say that it is a pricey area during tourist season. Local museums and hotels hike their prices up in the summer because that's tourist season.

  2. Pretty much everywhere in Britain has somewhere that will disgust you, and somewhere that will blow your mind with the sheer coolness of it all.  That's Britain!  Everything is very close together, so the cool and the horrible are within walking distance of each other.

Oxford is nice.  Bath is nice.  Cambridge is nice.  London is nice...

(Plenty of nice stuff up north too.)

...and all of them are nasty too if you're in the wrong bit.

I think you're wise not to be driving, but public transport is expensive if you're thinking in dollars.  h**l - it's expensive if you're thinking in pounds too...  ...but it is dramatically better than US, with the exception of a few major cities.  (If you live in NY, get ready for a disappointment.  If you're in the bible belt, it's great.)

Looked at your photos... ...you might want to try some more outdoorsy areas.  Plenty of them, but you should check it out.  The normal advertised destinations are pretty urban.  Lot of people in a small space, y'know...

  3. Oxford is a lovely place - you will enjoy it. You should go to London too, although there are area's there that aren't so nice.

  4. Well, that's entirely up to you.  It is your choice in life who you choose to influnce yourself in your early [or later?] steps of life.

I am self-educated mostly - and chose to motivate myself in the knowledge I now know.  It takes time to want to find out about certain things.  They could be complex through maths or complex construction techniques resolved through creative skills and a common sense.

We should all have the choice layed before us to choose our best skills at what ever time they seem interesting to us.  But in order to achieve this, a new 'education' needs to be taught to the future teachers and scientists or theologians of our future young.

Give them a greater choice of what they feel they need to know.

  5. I went to Oxford to study and consequently return several times a year.  It is a spectaclar city.  The architecture is tremendous.  The university IS the city, apart from the industrial centre out at Cowley.  The ideology of the university is that you have enough time to develop your other interests while there, so there is lways lots to do.  It is very cosmopolitan and affluent.  In fact, think of Cambridge, Mass.  When I was there there was a big class divide and lots of politics but that has subsided.  It can be very snobbish still. That sid, there are loads of clubs and societies, every type of opportunity to do sports, and, if you get homesick, a large number of yeanks, on Rhodes scholarships and the like.  It can be expensive though.  It depends how much money you have to spend. Remember the parlous state of the dollar.  YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO HIRE A STUDIO THROUGH AN AGENCY, SO GET GOOGLING.  What happened to the wedding plans?

  6. yess

  7. plenty of history in Oxford but be careful at night time if out alone

  8. you wont need a car but you will need a bike if your going to stay in Oxford, its got buses but nothing is that excellent, bikes rule in Oxford.
