I don't have health insurance and I am currently unemployed. I need to save as much money as possible, but what liabilities do I face when going to a cut rate optician?

  1. If you don't have any unusual problems, there's no reason you can't use the optician at Sam's Club. You will probably save a *ton* of money.

  2. Sam's or America's Best or Lens Crafters.  They'd save you lots more money than a regular optician's office.  I don't think you face any liabilities at a cheaper optician.  If you're going for glasses, the frames won't be the most expensive or the latest fad, but they're good, durable glasses.  I've had no issues with any of them.

  3. You might do ok at Sam's club. I personally wouldn't buy glasses from the same place I can get a 40 lb bag of dog food and 55 gallon drum of mayo, though. Your first question, besides cost is, what type of warranty do you have on your glasses. Places like lenscrafters,(who aren't cheaper, just perceived that way), have a 1 year warranty. If you break your glasses they will replace them at 1/2 the current retail price, so you buy another pair at half the cost the first pair cost. Some warranty! The quality of your eyeglasses is not solely dependent on the materials alone. If the optician is a hack then your glasses will reflect that. We have a BJ's, like Sam's, with an optical. I find it amusing that the optician there wears a white lab coat with jeans. Such a professional look. Price shop the regular optician. Explain your circumstances and I'm sure they will have a line of inexpensive frames you can pick from.  You said "your regular optician", so I assume you have glasses already. Ask about changing the lenses in your current frame, that will save you money too. If you go to Sam's you can always have the prescribing doctor verify the prescription was filled correctly.
