Should I go to this group?

I was raped. I am talking to a counselor and she suggested i go to a support group. The guy that did this is well known in the community and I am afraid I will see someone who knows me or him and will tell him. His parents are also big in town and know my family. I never prosecuted him because I hid it from everybody and now no proof. Should I go? What are the benefits and drwbacks? Would it compromise my safety?

  1. You can go to the support group without identifying your rapist. If you feel that uncomfortable going to a local support group attend one in a neighboring county, or see if you can find one online. But yes you should seek some support, from woman who have experienced what you have. Should you decide to attend a local group and if you feel your safety is in jeopardy I wouldn't tell anyone who raped you unless your planning on pressing charges to put the creep away. Your life is much more precious than that. The benfits are amazing. Just going and being able to talk to people who know what you have been through it emotionally priceless. The support you have will be enough to help you through this tough time.  And right off the bat I cannot think of a negative reason for you to go. No one has to know who raped you...just that you were raped.

  2. Instead, you should tell the authorities what happened to you.

And, name names.  I don't believe that you will be able to achieve peace without publicly naming this perpetrator.

But, that is just my opinion.  Do what you feel is right.
