Should I go up the empire state building at night or during the day?

On a date.. ? go at night. Its very romantic and exciting.

I have been to New York a few times, and last month while I was there I decided to finally go up the Empire State Building.  Although, I couldn't find the entrance.  So I still didn't manage it, one day I will.

I heard night is great though, and you see at the flights of the City.  And I remember when I was there in April, it looked so strange with the clouds around the middle of it.  It looked haunted, because you could just about see the red light through the clouds, really cool looking.

Chris, the 360 views of New York are worth seeing both during daylight hours and by moonlight.

So go later in the afternoon and stay till it turns dark.

The 86th Floor Observatory is open from 8am to 2am.

You can stay up there as long as you wish, and (if you tire of the view) there is a gift shop to fill in the time while waiting for night to fall.

Just don't go on a cloudy day and remember a jacket, it gets windy up there.

How about dusk.  It really is something to see the dayscape transform into the nightscape.  Plan on getting to the top a little before sunset, which you can view over Jersey.  While it is still light, stroll around all faces of the building, spending some time to study each direction.  Enjoy the sunset, then repeat the tour.  

Maximum bang for the buck.

After living 10 miles from Manhattan my entire life I finally decided to do it, it was kinda cool, I suggest you definitely do it earlier in the day if you don't want to wait in line forever

I love going up at night.  It is breathtaking!  I recommend taking at least a sweater.  It can get pretty chilly up there.

Both if you can.  But during the day (albeit REALLY early) if you cant do both.

I think at night (as long as it's clear), you'll get a much prettier view. :)
