I was on my school golf team this year because i thought it was a sophisticated sport and i like to try new things. I had never played golf before the first day of practice with my high school team. The people on the team were okay but nothing too special. We started practicing in the middle of the summer everyday and it continued throughout the first month of school. Waking up at 8 and golfing until 5 or 6. I missed out on hanging with my friends several times. I am having to decide wether or not i should play next year soon and im not sure what to do. I like playing and it kept me in good shape but my best handicap was arond 126!!! I am obviously a bad golfer and my coach will not help me. I have gotten 3 lessons before but they are very expensive so i try not to go too much. I would really like to hear opinions so comment away : ]

  1. You didn't say anything positive about the game so that gives the sense that it isn't what you want to do. I was the same way before I got to high school. I gave up SO many times! But then I realized the following things... you can play it wherever you travel, you meet great people while you golf, anyone can play even if you aren't good, and you can play your WHOLE life! Now, it is completely up to you. Myself, I took lessons and practiced every day! I practiced in the summer Monday - Thursday, took off Friday and spent it with my friends and then Saturday morning I played with my dad. That still gave me Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Now really, if you go to the course and practice you don't need to be practicing from 8am - 5 or 6pm. Golf is like any other sport, you get tired and burned out if you are hitting balls all day. I get tired after a few hours. You will just get bored and tired if you are doing it all day. However, you can pracitce from like 10am - 1 or 2pm and still have from 2 til whenever that night to spend time with your friends. Golf is a sport where you have to show that you want to improve. I take lessons weekly just to check on my swing and game etc. So, this is what my instructor told me when I started to give up " if you saw some measure of success you would grow attached to the game ". I did see success because the first day I went from not being able to hit the ball, to being able to drive the ball pretty far. Golf is like anything else, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.

Lessons can get expensive, so if you want to improve your golf game, I would prove it to your parents first. Prove to them that you want to become better and lower your score. Go to the driving range and hit balls, practice your swing in your backyard, putt in your bedroom on the carpet into a cup. You would be amazed at how much just doing your swing and putting into a cup can help your game. I putt every night before I go to bed. Once you prove to them that you are willing to work, I am sure they wouldn't mind getting you a few more lessons.

It just up to you. Are you willing to golf in the mornings and spend time with your friends, or do you just want to spend time with your friends? Are you willing to practice between lessons like the instructor tells you? Do you want to succeed at golf?

  2. golfs a game you can play all your life.If you don't think its fun competitively don't play on the team. But dont give up on playing golf.Get acouple of your buddies and just play it for fun.Golf is a challenging game .I know what 126 is and i know what 84 is.But the more you play the better you will

get .Go to a public course ,respect the rules of the course.domt take a score card, Dont take forever looking for lost balls .AND ALWAYS LET FASTER PLAYERS PLAY THRUU!!!!!

  3. some people would say stick with it...  but i say find something you are naturally good at.  Everyone has that one sport.

  4. You don't mention anything positive so I would pursue some other form of entertainment. You can always return to golf later in life.

  5. its ok, I tried out for the golf team for the first time this year too, I am 13. If anyone in your family plays it is a great idea to play with them and have them teach you to play better, play often. I love the game, I usually shoot in the mid 90s. Just keep trying golf is a sport you can play for a long time

  6. Play it cause you like it. Not to be on a team.  But its hard to pass up that free golf.

  7. If you enjoy it, keep playing, but maybe not on the team.  Just go by yourself whenever you want.  It is a fun but very challenging sport.

  8. Still golf, but don't join the team.  Find that one sport you rock at.

  9. If you like playing then continue to play.  There are things you can do to get better.  Read golf publications to get more of an understanding of the game.  Try drills in golf magazines.  I've been playing for almost 8 years now and I have never taken a lesson.  I shoot in the low to mid 80's.  I have done the things I mentioned previously.  Practice chipping and putting the most.  That is how you score.

  10. Apparently you do not have the aptitude for the sport so why waste your time. Find another endeavor or convince yourself that you can conquer the game and devote all your spare time to practice. The only way to improve is to putt, chip, hit approach shots until your hands get sore. Then do it again tomorrow.Once you have built up some confidence try the irons etc.
