Should I have a Baptismal or not?

My husband and I are non practicing catholics, but we do believe. We have a child, that I would like baptised. He says if we dont practice we should have her baptised. I believe we should. What do you think? What is the right thing to do?

Also if my husband is requested to be a godfather of another child, should he accept, I dont think he should if he doesnt even want to baptise his own child.

WHat should I do?

  1. You should baptise your son: no problems if you don't practice, but someone should take the engagement to educate him/her in accordance with Christian values, and you need engage yourself (during the ceremony) to do not oppose it. Remember it is a basic sacrament, not a game or a social event.

Of course your son or daughter will choose what to follow and to believe later: Baptism has no influence on free will as it happened for you and your husband, so you are not putting a limitation on your baby choices

Your husband may (if he is baptised) be the godfather. But he has to take a very serious engagement to substitute parents in case of need and support the christian education of the baby and support and guide him or her through a christian life. If he cannot keep this engagement or he doesn't believe in it, better to find a kind excuse and renounce (he can explain to the priest and the priest will help him to explain in the best way to your friends).

Always better to do not take engagements you aren't willing to keep

Having studied in a Catholic university I had to follow 3 mandatory theology courses, one of them was on Baptism

PS of course you will carry around no one( nor devils nor angels)  in either case :-)

  2. I think you should baptize your child because people say if you dont get baptized you carry around with yourself a devil instead of an angel but IDK if thats true but Iv been baptized. You should just in case.

  3. Try asking this in R&S and Family Relationships, because it is a religious and relationship issue.

Genealogists are biased. We LOVE baptismal certificates. For the longest time in history, the clerics generated and kept all such records, because they were the only ones who could read and write. And we don't care about the religion, either. Just the proof of dates and parentage provided by the document.

This is a Dr. Laura question, and genealogy is more like forensic auditing.

Good luck and congrats and best wishes for the new little one in your life...
