Question:

Should I have gotten a stimulus check?

I filed my own taxes, and I earned over $3000. I am 19 and a full time student, but my parents said they did not claim me as a dependent. However, I checked the IRS website, and it said that I did not receive one because I was claimed as a dependent. My parents are paying for my college, so does that have something to do with it?

  1. Apparently, you won't be getting one.  If your parents did not claim you as a dependent, have them take out their copy of their income tax paperwork and see if that's true.  Then, they must protest to the correct department.  Call the IRS and ask how to file a claim.

  2. If you were claimed as a dependent then your parents got the$300 dollars part of the stimulus package in their check.

They owe you that money, go get it :)

    Good Luck

  3. Be sure you did not check the box on your return that says someone else can claim you.  Also look at your parents' return and be sure they didn't claim you.  If both those things are true, contact IRS for a better explanation.

I suspect one of these two reasons is why you are not getting a stimulus payment.  Dependents don't qualify.

Either you or your parents can amend your/their return if in error.

  4. Did you claim yourself on your return?  If not, you won't get a stimulus payment.

If you CAN be claimed, even if you aren't, then you are not allowed to claim yourself.

  5. Not real sure, sounds like a mixup on someone's part.  However, you're better off without that check anyway!  Next year, they're deducting the amount of your stimulus check from the tax refund or adding to amount due.  I sent my check back.  Not worth it!  Thanks Uncle Sam!

  6. Hmmm...well I don't know buddy.  Usually...those who get over $3000 are supposed to get the return.  Since you were "claimed as dependent" I guess that might be why..but I'm not sure.  Yet your parents told you they didn't, so I'm totally unsure why you didn't get the rebate check.  I'm guessing it could be one of the two reasons: 1. Because you're claimed as a dependent  or  2. Even if they didn't claim you as a dependent it could be because your parents pay for your college.

I'm not sure.  I do however think you should talk to the IRS about this.  Maybe you could give them a call.  Good luck, I wish you the best :).  Hope all goes well, ^^.

  7. It has to do with exactly what the IRS said.

  8. Even if your parents didn't claim you, you can't claim your own exemption unless you support yourself.

Chances are you filled out your tax return correctly (that is a 1040EZ and you checked  the box on line 5) and thus were recognized as a dependent.
