Question:

Should I have my hair chemically straightened? ?

I've mentioned this to my mom before, and she didn't like the idea- her arguments were that it was costly, and i might ruin my hair. What she doesn't know is I drag myself out of bed at five in the morning to straighten it everyday, and usually get six hours of sleep. I want to join my high school swim team next year, but it is in the morning everyday, so i wouldn't have time to straighten my hair. I couldn't stand going anywhere with my real hair. So i have a few questions...

How long does this kind of straightening last? What are the chances of damaging your hair? How much does it cost? Any links and additional details or experiences would be super helpful! Thank you!

  1. All relaxers damage hair to some extent..no matter who does it. Your hair is healthier in it's natural state, and the relaxer may even cause extreme breakage. I think you should just make your natural hair healthy and wear that. Relaxers are more damage than they are worth....not only that, but you are NOT supposed to get in a pool with chemically relaxed hair, anyway. You'll have to rinse your hair out IMMEDIATELY every time you get out of the pool, and because the chemicals in the pool are strong (as well as in the relaxer) it wil only weaken your hair shaft, dramatically.

  2. well i did my hair at home with an organic relaxer kit my hair is extremely curly i followed all directions on the box to a t i then deep conditioned it with an organic protein conditioner now i can style my hair in minutes and i have no frizz it didn't ruin my hair at all

  3. I bought a kit from the drugstore that is like a home perm but it straightens instead of curling the hair.  My friend and I both used the same product and it caused no damage to either of our hair. It lasted about 2 - 2 1/2 months and was totally worth doing it myself. Your mom might change her mind when she sees how inexpensive it is and you may need her help to get the product evenly throughout your hair. Below is the product i used at drugstore.com but you could probably go to your local drugstore or WalMart.

  4. It sounds like the best option for you, but it does damage your hair a lot. My friend wanted to chemically straighten her hair, until she heard it completely ruins your hair's natural colour, which it can do. But, if you are this desperate it is an option but I'd try thinning your hair to cut down on straightening time before doing something so drastic. Ask your stylist for more info. Hope it Helps.
