Question:

Should I have the blood under my fingernail drained?

Four days ago I slammed my right thumb in a car door, and there's been blood under the nail ever since. It doesn't really hurt if I don't touch it or anything, but the backside of my thumb is very swollen and tender. Because of this I can't really use my finger, and I've kept it in a splint. However, school starts in a week and I want to be able to write (legibly), which I can't really do right now. So my question is this: should I go to the ER and have the blood drained or is it too late because the injury happened on Sunday? Also, is the process painful and would I be able to play soccer in the days following? Thanks!

  1. It all depends on how bad it is. Does it feel like there is a pressure build up under your nail? If it feels like their is a lot of pressure then you should have it looked at but if it is only painful when you use it or bump it I think your fine. I would take ibuprofen that well help with the swelling and alternate hot and cold packs on it that will help also. the would numb you finger before doing anything and you would be able to play soccer.
