Question:

Should I install soffit vents or replace soffit altogether with perforated

I am finishing my 2x4 truss attiic. It needs ventilation. I installed ridge venting on the peak.

I currently have aluminum soffit which is not perforated. I have never installed siding before and am not sure if it would be easier to cut openings in existing soffit with a zip disc, and cap with soffit vents, or just remove the old soffit an replace with the perforated stuff. Also, I was thinking the soffit vents might look ugly.

Any other tips from those with experience?

  1. Either will be OK, it is just a matter of prefernce - balancing on a ladder cutting vents wouldn't be my idea of fun and as you say they are not the prettiest, so the perforated may be the way to go. There is an alternative and that is to keep the solid soffit a 1/16th or so away from the wall to form a neat continuous gap. Btw if you use a breather type felt (Tyvek) under the roof finish this is all rather less of a problem than it used to be as you are less likely to trap water vapour.
