Right now I'm in the DEP for Navy. My MOS is ABH. I've been thinking of getting out and switching to USMC branch with MOS Artillery. Which would you choose?? soldier or sailor. I'm kinda pumped up about being a Marine though, and i'm looking for a real physical challenge too.

Also, If I get disqualified in NAVY DEP will it affect my way into the USMC??

  1. yea do they marines they are awesome

  2. If you're thinking artillery because you think IF you get deployed to Iraq you'll be far behind the action, think again. Indirect fire (artillery) is rarely used nowadays because of the high collateral damage involved. Marines in Arty are just regular grunts now, you'll be patrolling and doing all that fun stuff.

  3. First of all USMC is made up of Marines and not soldiers..

Secondly, just choose whatever branch best fits your wants and needs..

It is interesting you are stuck between the Navy and USMC as if the two are the same or similar,..The two could not be further opposites so understand that the USMC is nothing like the Navy..

Understand the USMC is not for everyone..

  4. Hey, you have to do what works for you.  I'm a Navy wife...and a Marine Mom...so I'm partial to either one.  :o)  It's your future...which one would you prefer to do?  Just keep in mind...a sailor's life (the Navy) is very different from a Marine's life.  Do your research and after careful consideration...only than make your decision.  Good Luck.

  5. Your choice - service in either service is very respectable - as stated earlier - the Marines aren't just for anyone.  You should also think about your career after the military (after 20 or after 1 enlistment) exactly how marketable is having an Artillery MOS?

Sounds to me like you've either watched a few too many Marine movies or you have a buddy who is a Marine. Be sure because it's a big step.

As for getting disqualified - talk to the Marine Recruiter if you really want to be a Marine - he is the best source of information. I'd say the Navy recruiter but he'd be understandably biased.

    Good Luck...

  6. Stay Navy....Full Steam Ahead!  I was a Navy Corpsman and loved every minute of it...(mostly).

You can still work with Marines without having to be one. ABH is a good rate and you will do fine. I hope you like going to sea.  You will likely go aboard an aircraft carrier.

I spent a lot of time at Naval Air stations. Great duty. You can get some awesome shore duty as an ABH. There are plenty of NAS all over and usually I've had a great time at those type of commands...even at the base hospital. (I was HM)

Don't be a grunt unless you like running all the time and humping (as in marching with a heavy back pack) The Marines are great don't get me wrong, but they are into all that heavy stuff. Where as I enjoy three hots and a cot. I don't like marching in the rain or sleeping in a tent.

**Note: I don't want to Marine bash...I love the Marines...I just don't want to be one.  Even at Camp Lejeune, I was Naval Hospital. All my patients were Marines and they were great guys. I will take care of one in a heartbeat. Marines are always cool to the Corpsmen.

**Note: If you do something stupid to disqualify Navy you could ruin your chance for all other branches of the military. Recruiters talk to each other, and it would go on your record. (The miltary keeps records)

  7. If you have to ask: Navy, definitely.  DQ'd for one, DQ'd for all.  Good luck to you.
