My husband is in the army and I have been thinking about joining a military branch. I am a nurse so I would go in as an officer. I have a 5 yr old daughter who is by my ex. What would be the benefit of joining? The cons of joining? What would happen with custody of my daughter?

  1. Think hard about your daughter.  It is hard enough on military families without having both parents in the military.  The needs of the service comes first in assignments.  You and your husband could conceivably be deployed at the same time to two different duty stations.  They try to accomodate you but I have seen many instances where it just did not happen and the kids wind up passed around to relatives.  The long term effects are just not worth it in my opinion.  Your kids are more important than any job.

  2. You would go in as an officer if you are a BSN. If you have an Associate Degree in nursing or LPN you will go in as enlisted.

You can keep custody of your daughter. (you will have to have a family care plan...things like power of attorney and other child care arrangements)

    The Pros:

good benefits, good pay, comradely, doing something with your life that is challenging, for many traveling to all sorts of places.

    The cons:

family separation, long hours, long lines, long deployments. For some travel.

  3. yes! so that your daughter will be remembering that her mum had died while serving he crusaders.
