Okay, so I am thinking about joining the swim team next year. I am going to be a sophmore, though. I swim every summer at a country club (not competitively, just hanging out in the pool). Should I join?? How should I train this summer?

  1. Yes.  You should check out the "Total Immersion" method of swimming.

  2. I would go for it. If you don't make the team, it's okay, at least you tried!

What I did last summer (and I will do this summer) was I got to the pool early and got a lap lane for myself (otherwise the old ladies get in the way).

The first day I was at the pool, I did 4 laps of freestyle (or whatever your stroke is). The second day, I did 6. Then I did 8. I also did some diving practice. Obviously if you do backstroke, you don't need to practice diving.

    Good luck!

  3. dude trust me join it because since your not new to swimming you would have some experience

  4. Swimming competitively is different than recreational swimming.  One way to train is to join a swim club.  They train year round.  Many of the "serious" swimmers will be involved with club swimming.

    Why not try it??

  5. Defiantly join.  1st of all, swim laps.  2nd of all, wear a jammer, but only when swimming competitively.  Soon enough, if you are made fun of, you just say, "At least I can swim, loser," or something like that.  That's what I do.  To buy a suit

It is a list of many suits.  I'll give you a list of stuff:

Jammer.  Use this when practicing and training.

Flip turn Drag suits.  Wear OVER jammer when practicing.  It helps you drive to swim faster.

Briefs.  Wear if serious but only during meets.

Fastskins.  Wear if extremely serious.  That's why I wear one.  order 2 sizes down. Expensive. (Link: http://www.speedousa.com/index.cfm?fusea... )

You are probably wondering why I'm teling you about suits.  It is one of the most important things about swimming.  And also, trunks suck.

  6. The best way to train for your high school team is to join a team now. Does your CC offer a team? If so, join up.

  7. do u even know how to swim?? I  mean, sure, you go to the pool to hang out and stuff, but can you swim laps?  if yes, do long distance sets and sprint sets by yourself or join a club.  team is a huge commitment, it is time consuming and tiring, but it is still a lot of fun.

  8. here are a few questions you should ask yourself before you get serious with swimming.

can you do a 1000yd strait without stopping

can you swim a 50yd free in less than 40 sec you'll probably want 30 sec flat to be a sprinter

can you occupy yourself for those 10 hour swim meets

but if you want to be serious go to i think its called goswim sign up for the forum and ask some questions. (you can also get tip on drills you can use to build technique which is just as important as being in shape.

most of all swimming if you have a bad coach is heck.

now is the time to join if your going to get serious and you want to get good. but if your in there for friends or a girl I'd wouldn't probably join because a lot of swim coaches are very demanding and it's hard work and most coaches want you to practice one or twice a day 5 days a week so. but you do get killer muscles if you work hard.

so probably the best question is are you willing to work hard. if so, go for it even if its just for the chicks working hard has this weird kind of fun to it and even if you answered no you can probaly get by but that is probably the shape you'll want to be in.

and if you want to train the best workout i use goes something like this. (you can adjust the specifics according to your skill)

    streching

    400 free

    200 kick         warm up

    200 drill

    8*100 kick

    8*25 sprint kick     kick set

1000 pull             pull set (this is with arms only if you don't have paddles or a pull tab just swim it focusing on techneque)

    200 free

    200 back

    200 fly                            main set

    200 brest

    5*100 sprint

here you can have a small easier set but i usually just go to the warm down

300 cool down slow nice and easy so you dont cramp after

this is probably way hard if your just starting but basically you want to have a warm up, kick set, pull set main set and then warm down
