Question:

Should I just take it?

I'm 18 years old. I went to the emergency room the other day because of chest pain, and heart palpitations. The doctor gave the diagnosis of anxiety. I've had anxiety attacks since I was like 12. Never really been medicated for it. He gave me zoloft and atarax, which I guess is a drug that can be used for itchiness as well as anxiety. I took it last night, and it seemed to just slow everything down. I wasn't obsessiving over one specific thought over and over, I was relaxed. Is there any way I could get addicted? Because I just want to relax at night...Thanks :)

  1. If you have this anxiety only occasionally and are able to recognize the symptoms in the early stages, then you should be on something like that you only take as needed. And you should start with a small dosage and only increase it as necessary. If the doctor has given you something to take 4 times a day every day for the foreseeable future, I would ask for something else such as Atavan or Xanax. Also, you should consider going to a therapist to explore the root causes of your anxiety. If you can figure that out, you might be able to manage your anxiety without drugs.

  2. I have tried everything for panic attack disorder and anxiety. Klonopin as needed works best for me.  It also doesn't make me feel slowed down. I take it and then like 15 minutes later realize the anxiety and chest pain is gone. So many times I have thought this time it really is a heart attack.

  3. <> any medications out there is subject to addiction.

You need to be care-full not to allow yourself NOT to depend on them< this I know is easier said than done but trust me,,,you don't want to become addicted to either one of these medications.
