Question:

Should I keep the old job?

I recently gave notice on a job I had for ten years. I am leaving beacause the workload is overwhelming. I accepted an offer for a position at another place; unfortunately this job is 30 miles away via congested southern california traffic. The old job just offered more money, but as I said the workload is killing me. However I really don't want to move, and I am starting to have anxieties about the new job (what if it doest work out; all the commuting and less pay, ). Now I am thinking whether I should back out of the new position and return to the old job? What do you think?

  1. Tell your old job that you weren't leaving because of the pay, you were leaving because of the workload.  If they offered you more pay to stay with them, they might be willing to do other things to convince you to stay.  I suggest you tell them your true reasons for seeking employment elsewhere and see if they are willing to address those concerns.

  2. This is your personal choice. If you really are overwhelmed I would think it would be better to take the new one.. After you learn the new job you will be fine and rolling the day by just like your old job. If you really are having doubts then stay at your old job. Explain to them that they have to lay off just a little bit and that you do want a raise.. Tell them that the other job is willing to pay you ____ much and if they could match it that would be great! It has worked for me a couple times. I personally left a job this year, a 7 dollar pay CUT, but I love my new job. I am much happier at work which makes me happier at home.

  3. With the cost of gas, you should add the amount you'll lose in decreased salary at the new job to the cost of gas for the commute + something for wear and tear on your car. If you can live on what's left and will be happier with the new job, then make the move.

If you can't make your bills with that much less money, then you have no choice but to keep the old job. You can always keep looking for a new job that pays better and is closer to your home, even if you stay on at the old job.
