Question:

Should I keep writing my book?

A few months ago I decided I would write a book about vampires. Classic vampires to show those little twilight fan-girls what an actual "Vampire" is. Since then I have seen more and more (horrible) vampire books filling the shelves at my local bookstore. I'm becoming disgusted by all these teeny-bopper-vampire-love stories. I seem to have lost all interest in vampires since I've read some of these, and I've loved vampires, vampire stories, and all related material since I was a little girl. (Yes I was that morbid x] ) I haven't written anything in a while, and I find it very frustrating. I would like advice on whether I should continue to write my story or just forget it and start on something else. Anything you would like to say please feel free to go ahead.

  1. Althought I am one of those "little twilight fan-girls", put your vampire book on hold until the whole vampire thing wears out a bit.

  2. Hm... I noticed that too. Seems like after Twilight, authors seized the opportunity, hoping people would want to read more vampire-related stuff.

If you're really serious about this, maybe you should put it on hold for a while. At least until this vampire craze is over. I know that when I see a vampire story at the bookstore, I don't even give it a second glance because I know that it's just another attempt to capture some of Twilight's success.

If that isn't what your book is, you should finish it. Now isn't a great time to publish a (good) vampire book. But if you WANT your population of fans to be the Twilight fangirls, then maybe you should. Some of them really will go for anything vampire related once they've read Twilight.

So it boils down to this: do you want fans of your own, who are clearly interested in vampire stories, or do you want to try and steal a glimmer of the Twilight hype?

Also, if this book really is something that you were serious about, you shouldn't stop. Even if you don't publish right away, you shouldn't stop writing because of it. (Unless you really have lost interest, in which case the book will probably fail.) As a writer, writing is an unspoken obligation. When you find something that inspires you, you HAVE to write. It isn't a choice. Does this story inspire you, or is it simply to show "Twiligh fan-girls" what a vampire is? Because the first is the sort of story you finish regardless. The latter is something that you could quickly and easily lose interest in, causing a dull story.

As a writer, you HAVE to be into what you are doing. If you aren't at the moment, just take a break and come back to it when you feel inspired again. There is no point to writing when you don't feel anything compelling you.

  3. yes, vampires have become cliche. sad but true.

my advice, as an amateur author is to keep on chugging. who knows, among all that vampire trash, yours might be a gem. (emphasis on 'might be'. i'm not promising you a best-seller here)

if you really feel passion for the story, of course you should continue. it's your duty as an writer. if it's only the vampire part that bugs you, if you really want you can change it, to take away the vampires or something along those lines.

if you don't feel anything for the story...eh. it's your call.

    good luck, though!

  4. its been done ..... in virtually all forms

You might have a nice story but you'll struggle to make it original - even if it is 'different' as you say. Try doing a story which hasn't been done. Having said that, write about what you love and enjoy and know about. If you like vampires - write about them. If you aren't enjoying writing the story - question who you are writing the book for? Yourself? I hope so.
