  1. I'm guna say.... learn the basics just in case of emergency.

  2. YES

  3. Yes, you should always try and speak some french because you will be respected much more and the french will appreciate the effort.

    Bonjour - hello (daytime)

    Bonsoir - hello (evening)

Merci (beaucoup) - thankyou (very much)

De rien - Not at all (often a reply to merci)

    Au revoir - Goodbye

Excusez-moi/Pardon/ Je suis desole - Exuse me/Sorry (when you are pushing past someone for instance)

    C'est combien? - It's how much?

    S'il vous plait - Please

Je suis anglais/ Je parle anglais - I am english/I speak english

Parlez-vous anglais? - Do you speak English?

Ou se trouve.../Ou est le... - Where can one find/Where is the

Je voudrais le.. - I would like the...

C'est tres bien - It's very good (eg to compliment a meal)

Je ne comprends pas - I don't understand

    Le gare - trainstation

    le train - train

    le bus - bus (lol)

Oh and key things - don't pronounce the 's' at the end of a word, e is pronounced 'uh', 'c'est' is pronounced 'seh' and 'j' is always soft ie 'jeh'

    =)

  4. mais oui, pourquoi pas?

  5. It is always good to learn just enough to be able to cope with situations travelers find themselves in.

  6. Is this a trick question?  Of course you should make an attempt to learn some of the local language whenever you travel!

The amount to learn depends on the length and complexity of your stay.  If you're going for a week's vacation, then you need a few basic words and phrases.  If you're relocating for a 2-year job contract, you need to be fairly fluent.

  7. You should learn some basics -- greetings, please, thank you, excuse me,  where is, how much etc. I don't speak French, do you speak English?

If you don't at least make an effort with these, you are not going to get the best treatment.  They don't expect to you be fluent in French, but they expect some effort and above all good manners.

  8. It depends on how long you are going and how much you intend to interact with the locals. If you want to meet new friends, even if you speak only a small amount of French, the people there will love it when you speak their language.

Without French though you should be able to survive. Just don't expect everyone to speak English.
