Question:

Should I leave my job?

My boss (very apologetically) reneged on a payrise deal several months ago. I have just been offered another job offering more money and it also seems like a better career opportunity. Leaving my job will cause my current employer a real headache and I'm pretty sure they will feel I'm being disloyal as I've been here 3 years and been a star employee and this will appear to come 'out of the blue'. I do feel pretty bad about leaving them in the s**t but I've got to consider what's best for me. If you were me, would you leave your job?

  1. I sure would.  You have to do what's best for you because the company is going to what's best for them.  I understand the whole loyalty thing, but do you feel they were loyal to you when it was time to give you your pay raise?  Sure they were apologetic, but that doesn't put any more money in your pocket.  Write your letter of resignation and give it to them (1) one month in advance and let them know that if they find your replacement you'd be willing to train him/her.  That's about as loyal as you should be, it's time to move on to bigger and better things.

Hope this helps or at least leads you in the right direction.

  2. sounds like this new job is good, good, good...i've never felt bad about leaving for more money!!! just try and give a notice and let your boss know that this isn't personal, it's just business. i dont know the details, but it may not have been your boss's final decision to give you a raise. if it was the right fit and room for raises and advancement, i would work a notice and leave!!! GL

  3. The failure to give the promised raise - even if they really can't aford it - broke the "contract" of terms of employment. I feel you are free to accept the new position.

The only thing is you might offer to stay if they match the new job offer.

  4. i would look into that other job and do more research i mean you should only really consider leaving your other job if you truly believe that its the right thing to do for whatever reason.. you still seem to have some doubts.. i mean if your a star employee and your boss is even giving you a raise and all that it must mean that you have a higher chance of maybe even becoming a manager one day like your boss and if he does quit he may want you to take his place where as in the other job the boss there might already have his own "star employee" and it may take longer for himt o give you a raise in that job where as if you would of stayed in your current job your boss may be more willing to give you a raise faster, just because he knows that you will do great... giving the fact that your the "star employee"

  5. Why don't you set up a meeting with your employer and explain that you have been offered a new job elsewhere with new opportunities and a better salary.  If your current employer is in a position to offer you the same deal, then you will consider staying (they need to offer you the same type of career opportunity if they can really as well as the accompanying salary)

On the other hand, you have already been a loyal employee by working for them for the past 3 years, and you are just as entitled to further your own career opportunities by looking elsewhere, if your own company cannot offer you this.

As long as you give them the required notice period, you are not breaking any laws, and every employer knows that their staff could leave at any time, so it's up to them to deal with it when it happens.

If you have a very good relationship with your employer, you could always offer an overlap period where you help train up a new employee into your position.

I personally wouldn't sabbotage my own career growth because I felt bad about leaving a company who had already been disloyal to you by promising you a pay rise and then not fullfilling that promise......
