Should I leave my two dogs together or...? Please help!?

Please, please take time to read this! I really don't know what to do.

I have a foster dog about 8-9 months old. Since she is still kind of puppyish we are afraid to leave her alone in the house in case she destroys stuff. We have another dog and they get along but sometimes they play a little rough. They get in fights if there is a bone involved because the foster dog will want to take it from our dog.

The problem is me and my mom are leaving to go on a miny vacation for about 3-4 days. We will be gone on the weekends which is okay because my dad will be home, but on Monday and maybe Tuesday he will work and they will be alone. My friend is going in to take play with them about twice. I was wondering if we should take the chance to leave them alone together in the house or if we should put her in the bathroom with a bed and a bone (the bathroom is pretty big) and then my dad gets home at 6 and she will have little breaks to play with my friend.

What do you think? Thanks!

  1. I put my dog in my bathroom with water and food if I am gone for a few hours. I don't want any poo or diddle on my carpets and my dog will get mad because he didn't get to go with me.  Make sure you put anything he can chew up out of their reach.

  2. What breed is your dog, and if you know what is the foster dog?

  3. Yes, leave the dog's together that's how dogs play and get to know one another by fighting! Especially if there two male dogs! They'll be fine

  4. Good for you for deciding to foster this puppy.

I would get a crate/kennel to put her in while you are away. So you are 100% sure she isn't chewing anything or peeing anywhere.

But if this is out of the question, I would leave her in the bathroom. Be sure to 'puppy proof' it.

I would definatly put a stop to the puppy taking the bone from your other dog... that could start a fight later on down the road, specially as the puppy enters the stage where they find out what position they are in your 'pack'

  5. I have been fostering dogs for about 4 years now. The best advise I can give you is to invest in a kennel. Kenneling your puppy or even your own dog too protects them from harming themselves during the day and protecting your house from possible damage. It is not a cruel thing to do considering they will sleep most of the day anyway and why not in the crate when you have trained them it is their room. In most cases the dogs find the kennel to be their safe haven and like to go into the kennel on their own. My dog puts himself to bed in the crate when I have stayed up later than he wants to. If you are not around to supervise I would not have any toys or bones out that would pick a fight.

You can purchase a Dog crate at any pet store or at a local tractor supply.

  6. I would seperate them.

  7. Well, if she's chewing when you're not home, I'd crate her.  In the long run it could save her a lot of pain and you a lot of heart ache and vet bills.  This is just my opinion, but I think dogs feel better about being in a crate that they can see through than shut in a room.  Leave her  a bowl of water, a kong dog toy with some peanut butter in it to keep her occupied, and something to lay on.

  8. its up to u

  9. I think you will be amazed at how well they do together when you are away. From what you've said, they only tussle over bones.

    Don't leave any bones around!!!

Go away. Have a good time. If there is a problem when your dad gets home from work Monday night HE can do the bathroom thing on Tuesday. Wednesday you'll be home. PROBLEM SOLVED!

  10. separate!

either in a crate, or in a completely separate room - with a solidly latched DOOR, not a baby gate, just in case.

take no chances - un-supervised, bad things can happen, even by accident. what if one of them caught a tooth in the other's collar, during play?!

please be sure that any collars are smooth fiting, Not Chain, and have no loops to get caught on anything.

also leave safe chew-toys, like solid rubber, solid nylon, etc.

    have a good vacation!

    :-)

  11. If your concerned about them chewing up stuff put them in a big bathroom and put newspaper around so if they pee or poo you can easily pick it up. Leave some water in there and maybe some food.

    Good Luck!

  12. If they don't fight now then they should be fine, sounds like they get on. So keeping them a part might be a mistake. Don't leave any bones or any kind of food that might cause problems, but let them stay together.

  13. leave them together ..let them socialize a little more maybe their just playing ..my dogs vet says its ok to socialize!..good luck:-)
