Question:

Should I leave these poor wild birds alone, or not?

Almost every 4-6 months a new wild bird begins to make a nest in one of my mother's flower pots. That bird is either the mother, or even the father, I'm not quite sure. Everytime that certain bird makes its nest and its babies, I watch it every single day, and more of half of the mothers and fathers are being killed by flying into windows, getting hit by cars, etcetera.

How do I know this? I saw these halves being killed. The baby birds at the time were still growing in their nests, and everytime I knew their mothers or fathers died, I decided to leave them alone. I really dont think that was the right decision to make, but I thought at the time to leave the wilderness on its own. I knew the baby birds were not fledging, and I knew they couldn't fly as well. So, should I leave the baby birds all on their own, or should I keep them in captivity, feeding them until they could fledge if this incident happens again?

  1. Well if you are cetain both the paretn birds are dead and the babies are still featherless and helpless then you need to intervene by bringing them to a vet who excepts wildlife or find a wildlife rehabber in your area a vet should beable to refer you. It is free and they will take them and care for them and release them back into the wild when they are ready. It is illeagal to keep wildlife without a permit. Plus without the right knowledge you can actually kill them instead of help them which is heartbreaking for you. Trust me I have been there. :( Until you can get them somwhere you need to keep them warm. Do not give water. Depending on what type of bird you can feed them cut up mealwroms or bird handfeeding formula you get at petstore depending on their age. As for birds flying into windows put some decals on windows this will stop problem. Birds think they can fly right through. Duncraft store on line has very pretty frosted white decals in a variety of things from flowers to butterflies. Good luck  and thanks for caring about these little creatures. :)

  2. If it were me, I would fix the flower pots so that they can not build their nest in them. There by saving the mom and dad from dieing in the first place and you would not have this problem..

  3. you should find a way to make the flower pots so that they dont want to nest in there, and maybe, like, you should put stuff on the windows, so that the bird knows it cant fly through, like hang something off it, or what my freinds used to do is like, put stuff that their kids made, like little decorations on the windows, so then the birds dont fly into them.

also if you can feed the birds well, i woudl say feed them and then let them out, but the thing is somtiems when you bring birds into captivity they die.

like often if a bird is injured and you bring it inside to let it heal, it will die faster and more likely because its inside, and plus its all freaking out, and confined.

  4. If you are POSITIVE both parents are dead..then you would get the bird to a local wildlife rehab where they can be raised by experts and released into the wild when ready.  It would actually be illegal for you to care for them on your own as all wild native birds are protected by law.

  5. Make the flower pots less inviting for nesting, such as rocks around the base of the plants.

Put something on your windows (stickers or suncatchers with suction cups) to make them more visible so birds are less likely to fly into them.

Call your local animal shelter or vet and see if there is a wildlife rescue organization in your area.  If baby birds get orphaned, they are licensed and trained to care for them.  They need special care.  Then if it happens again, you know who to call.

  6. I think you should call your local avian centre, they will take the bird and take care of it and teach it to fly.

    Hope this helped,

    Goodluck!

  7. Ok, , ARE U SURE THE PARENT ARE DEAD!? If so, carefully pick up the pot, and put them in your car, set a few towels in the seat, DONT TOUCH THE BABYS, and take them to your local vet. Ask them if they can help. If they can't find an animal park, you know? Like were they take injured or amadoned animals and help? Remember, be careful with them, and dont touch them. Good Luck!
