Question:

Should I let my installer take my old central air unit or scrap it myself, is it worth it?

I have a 35 year old whirlpool 1.5 ton central air unit that is being replaced with a new one. The installer I hired to put in the new unit keeps telling me he could "take the old unit off my hands". Now i'm not an idiot and I know the copper is worth a few bucks in scrap. Could anybody tell me what I would expect to get for it, is there really enough copper in the unit for me to drag it down to the scrap yard, or should I just let this guy take it? Thanks

  1. If it contains no refrigerant you can cut the aluminum and copper coil out of it,at the tube sheet and expect to get around 50$ bucks for it ,at a recycle yard.Might not be worth the effort.I would let them dispose of it myself.

  2. There is probably a good amount of copper scrap, but there is also the old refrigerant to contend with.  If the guy is willing to take it away, I'd let him and be done with it, and enjoy your new a/c rather than sweating your tail off for a few bucks.

  3. if you take the time to disassemble it you can expect around $100.00 - $125.00 bucks for the scrap parts....

  4. The first thought that popped into my head was dealing with the coolant as well ~ which can be pretty pricey. In our community, they won't even accept AC units at the landfill or HazMat center from private parties.

I'd at least call the landfill first, and find out how much you'd be charged to dispose of the unit after you scrap out the recyclables.
