  1. Well no and yes. If you are able to keep an eye on your adult cat so that he does not hurt them bad then let the kittens find their own unique spot for sleeping if this does not bother you. It will take several days maybe even a couple of weeks for the adult cat to get used to them and tolerate them lol! If you cannot keep an eye out for them then yes put in crate, but be advised if they are in there very long they will releive themselves and you will have a mess to clean come morning.

My personal experiance is to let them out and get used to everything.

  2. If it's an option, give them separate rooms.  Many people put cats in the bathroom on spare bedroom at night anyway so they can get a decent night's sleep, and as long as they have food, water, litter and toys it isn't cruel.  If there's a chance your adult cat may be aggressive, give them a room to themselves so they'll be protected.

If the adult cat doesn't like them but isn't aggressive then yes, they can be allowed out as the cats will just avoid each other.  Make sure that your kittens won't be hurt by bigger cat though.  If there's any doubt, their own room.
