Question:

Should I let my wife be an egg donor?

My wife has been reading about egg donors and has since decided she wants to do it. She and I do feel like it is a noble thing to do, help another couple by giving them the ability to have a child. Although it would be strange to me that she would have another child out there some where.

We honestly could use the extra money, we are both college students. My wife is 5'8, blonde hair, blue eyes, and very beautiful.

So what do you think, should she go through with it and how much should she be compensated for donating her eggs?

Thanks

  1. She should go for it.. I donated my eggs this last April..and its true, she shouldnt be too scared of needles..... I was so scared of them.....once they told me that I was going to be injecting myself everyday and for 4 days 2x a day, I nearly passed out!! I was able to give myself the injections though since the needle is as small like the TB needles.... She will go through lots of testing and have vaginal ultrasounds and blood work...my boyfriend actually had to get blood work done also.... I only had 5 doctor appointments before I had the egg retrieval...they also put me on a low carb high protein diet right before the procedure.. Since they put me to sleep for it,  I didn't feel a thing...they retrieved 23 eggs which is ALOT..... I did hyper-stimulate though which caused me to retain water so i looked pregnant after the procedure....it went away the following week once I had my period.... different company's pay different... since I was a first time donor, I got paid $5000... which if you need some $$$, like I did, that was alot.. but I've heard that they can pay up to $7500 for first time donors also...... During the process and after (since I looked preggo), I would ask myself what I had gotten myself into but once I recieved a letter from the company stating that the couple that I had donated my eggs to was pregnant, it was all worth it... being able to make someones wish of having a baby come true is one of the best feelings ever..... Good luck to both of you if your wife does decide to do it!!

  3. Here is some information on thinking about becoming an egg donor:  http://www.health.state.ny.us/community/...

  4. There is a lot of testing involved in being a donor, psych as well as physical. They will do scans to make sure she doesn't have cysts or anything else going on, take blood (STD and other hormone tests). She can't have a fear of needles (getting shots) by any means. My 1st 2 donations I had to have blood drawn and vaginal ultrasounds ever single day for 2+ weeks. They monitor you very closely while stimming.

There are risks to doing this including hyperstimulation, infection, future infertility, scarring, puncture of the bladder or other organs.

She needs to decide if she wants it to be a totally anonymous, semi-opn or open donation. All of mine were totally anonymous..I know how many eggs were retrieved and that's it...that's how I wanted it. I received $2500-$5000 for each of mine..more as I did more donations. Average seems to be around $3-$4k though now.

This site has a lot of great info on it:

I did my last 2 donations through there.
