Question:

Should I mention letters of commendation on my resume?

At the job I had for eight years, I got letters of commendation from a Senator, two Congresspersons, and a Governor. Should I mention that somewhere in my resume or would it look like 'bragging'? Or should I have a 'letter portfolio' and just have it with me if I go on an interview and mention it if it seems appropriate?

  1. You should mention the letters either on your resume, or in your cover letter.  You should have the original letters, each in a plastic protective sleeve, with you at the interview.  Leave a copy of each letter, along with your list of references, with the interviewer.

You could add a line on your resume that says, "I have Letters of Commendation which are available upon request", or you could mention this in your cover letter, if you prefer.

At the bottom of your resume, you could combine:  "References and Letters of Commendation Available Upon Request"

    Good Luck.

  2. As a hiring manager, I agree with AngeloEl. Yes, it's "bragging" but that's what a resume is for! These are references and will impress the right hiring managers.

Keep in mind that you do need the skills for the job, or all the references in the world won't help.
