Question:

Should I move to Canada or Australia?

I live in the US but I'm thinking about moving to either Canada, Australia or possibly New Zealand for a few years or so. Now I'm not leaving because I hate America or anything negative like that, but mostly because I would like to spend a few years living somewhere different (I know, I know, Canada is a lot like the US and not as exotic as Australia but it is different). The Human Development Index overall ranks Australia 3rd, Canada 4th, and New Zealand 19th (not bad), but from somebody with firsthand knowledge which of the three is the easiest to move to and nicest to live in?

P.S. I do have a technical skill (hydrology with a degree).

  1. Hi,

Australia is a great country. I am not biased because I have lived in the USA and Canada and have seen New Zealand, and I honestly prefer Australia. It has vast landscapes and is a gorgeous place and is exotic, Canada and New Zealand are exotic, but for some reason I find them less interesting. Australia has such a wide range of scenery, from the beautiful beaches to the large deserts. It is hard to adjust from living in the United States to Australia, but in the end its really worth it. No offense, but the food from Australia has a lot more quality than food from the USA as we use more expensive ingredients (for example, cane sugar instead of Corn syrup) that taste a lot nicer.  Canada has pretty scenery, but if you want a dramatic difference in the way you live, Move to Australia. New Zealand is nice, but small. Also, there are a lot more jobs available in Australia because it is sooo big.  I think your degree will be recognized in Australia, but I am not sure so you should check up on that. If you want a snowy environment, there are quite a few places in New South Wales, a few hours from Sydney that snow. But if you want really warm weather and no snow, there are many places in Australia that have heat that can get up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 Celsius)  yearly.

In conclusion, Australia is a great places and a really nice place which has a relaxed, fun, nice environment, lovely people and a great lifestyle.

    Good luck,

    Hope this has helped.

by the way,  A great site for tourists about Australia is www.australia.com

and a great picture of Sydney is here:

  2. im from australia as well..and trust me it is an AWESOME place to live in. great warm weather, no snow hassles, and great beaches!! oh, and alott of space =]

  3. Having been to all three, I would say I like NZ the most. Cost of living is much cheaper but then so are the wages. We loved the south island since it was so much like Western Washington. But you may need to get hired first and then go through the emigration rigmarole to get in. Each has different rules. Their government's web site will explain it. If you go on a tourist visa you can't work so do your homework first.

  4. hey well i live in australia and it's great! in  southern W.A. the towns arent as close to each other as to QLD (apparently) so you can drive from one town and not see another for 3 hours but u get use to it

we have great beaches and the lifestyle is great

it wont snow in most of australia but if you wanna c the snow there r place 2 go, eg Threbo

    schooling is great

if you want 2 make heaps of money you have to work hard you cant just expect it but thats like it everywhere

i would definitly recommend living here, i dunno what canada is like but im going on exchange in a year or so, so i should know in 2 years. lol

  5. I think they're probably all really great places to live. Australia's economy is booming at the moment, especially the mining industry, and you should have no trouble whatsoever finding a good job with your hydrology degree.

I can tell you that I love living in Australia - I've visited the other countries and although they were great I would definately prefer to live here. It's got so much going for it.
