I am recent college grad that is in search of a job. At this point, I have no prospects so I am looking for part time work. I know that putting that I have a college degree might decrease my chances. However, I do not want to lie when the application asks outright if I have a college degree.

  1. If you are applying for an advertised job that requires 2 legs and 2 hands, it is of no real benefit to mention that you have a college degree, but it often helps to mention you are working on one, such as the next higher degree, when you put together enough money to resume your education.

You may even find that they would like someone who could become an assistant manager.

  2. No, you shouldn't. You should be honest and proud of your college degree and don't be disappointed if you don't get the job. Don't quit looking either even if you have a part time job that's not even related to your major. Any good work experience could help a lot in building a strong resume.

  3. If you are concerned about not being hired due to being over-qualified, then I would just skip the space where the applications ask how many years of college you completed.  The interviewer will assume that you did not attend college...so you would not really lying to him/her.  Unfortunately, it is often easier for underqualified persons to get hired than it is for overqualified persons.  Employers hesitate to hire overqualified applicants because they feel that they are only looking for a lesser job until they can find something in their field...and therefore would tend to be short term employees.

  4. People aren't discriminated against for being "overqualified" very often.  It's the underqualified who are penalized.

  5. Absolutely include it.   Why lie about your achievement.   A college degree will put you one step ahead of people that don't.   When you are interviewing and the person is concerned as to whether you'll stay on the job, because you have a degree, turn the question back around and ask whether the company likes to have people that are dependable and forward thinking.  They are bound to say yes.  That's when you can say that having the degree not only has taught you to be that way but also has given you the ability to represent their company to their customers in a much more professional manner.
