No, I actually think darker colours would be better! Navy would be great for a nautical look, and if you have a tan, black will show it off.

Actually, darker colors are better with white. As someone has already pointed out, white shorts look gorgeous with a navy top. They'd also look great with a deep green. But, white shorts are quite summery, so I'd put them away until next summer.
