Question:

Should I open my garage sale a day early?

I advertised on craigslist that I would be having a garage sale on Saturday only. But now, less than two days before the big day, all the local weather forecasters are beginning to predict RAIN for Friday night and Saturday morning. Yeah, it's likely they'll all be wrong. But it would be just my luck to have a downpour that lasts a good part of the day, and my sale will have to be postponed.

Friday is supposed to be a gorgeous day, and I'm thinking about opening up the sale that afternoon, instead of taking my chances by waiting for Saturday.

But I'm wondering if this would be a wise move, since I did advertise that I'd be opening on Saturday. Will people who saw my ad be really upset that I changed the opening of the sale? I feel uncomfortable about making people upset, like I was dishonest or something. For some die-hard garage salers, getting "first dibs" at a sale is a big deal. I don't know how many people around here are up on craigslist, though, and I didn't advertise in any newspapers.

What should I do? Take a chance on the weather and wait for Saturday, or try to increase my chances of a successful sale by opening while the weather is supposed to be nice...but risk making people upset that I opened my sale earlier than I had said I would. If I do decide to open on Friday, it wouldn't be until around lunchtime, and I'd place a new ad on craigslist.

  1. Opening early would not be bad..however some people get up and plot thier garage sells in a route that links together in an organized drive to save gas...Cover your items with tarps and have them handy and open saturday as planned..if it downpours cover your items up..when it stops uncover them..alot of people will burn alot of gas to get to this "advertised garage sell"..so make every effort to be there...You could also go back and edit the add and put in a "WEATHER PERMITTING" clause in it...

  2. Wow, its a garage sale, if people are going to be upset that you opened early, do you really care?  Its much more annoying to go to a garage sale that is supposed to be open and its not!  I saw go for it and don't worry about anyone else!
