Question:

Should I pay for a used car with a transfer (3 days before I collect) or a bankers draft on the day?

I left a deposit on Saturday with a garage for a used car. I will collect it on Friday. I have agreed to transfer the money tomorrow (Tuesday) so it will be cleared in time. However, I am now thinking I should withhold the money until I see the car has been MOT'd and taxed(as agreed).

I would then need to give a bankers draft, but could I take the car then, or would I need to wait till the money clears?

I am in the UK.

Thanks for any advice!

  1. Either way would be fine. Even a cheque or credit card is a better alternative to cash as at least then there is a paper trail and proof of purchase you can use if anything goes wrong with it. I would also recommend that you withhold payment until you've seen the MOT cert and tax disk if they are part of the deal.

  2. transfer but be sure to get a recite and test drive the vehicle

  3. Since this is a used car, I would bring the bank draft with you when you go to pick up the car. That way, you'll have leverage in the event everything is not proper. If this dealer has your money, it could get sticky !
